Drexel is built on one simple truth: great buildings don’t create great communities — great people do. And few people embody the Drexel spirit more fully than Karl Wikstrom.
Karl isn’t just part of our team; he’s woven into our history. He’s been a Drexel resident for 11 years. A decade ago, he literally helped build Drexel’s office with his own hands. These properties aren’t just places he works, they’re places he’s shaped. That pride shows up every single day.
Title: Maintenance Technician
Hometown: Chicago
Years with Drexel: 2014-2016, 2025 to present
A Sunday That Says Everything
A recent Sunday, while most of Chicago stayed dry and indoors, Karl was on a roof in the pouring rain. A resident’s drain had severely backed up. The kind of issue that can turn a home upside down fast. Karl didn’t hesitate! He stayed on that roof for as long as required, soaked through, methodically troubleshooting until he found the culprit. Then he rodded the stack pipe from the top of the building, working through the storm until the water finally cleared.
“I’ve been doing plumbing since I was 14,” Karl said. “My priority is simple: take care of it, get out of there, and move on to the next one.”
That’s not just a skill. That’s heart.
The Drexel Standard: Grit, Humility, Care
Karl doesn’t do this work for applause. He doesn’t ask for recognition. He treats our residents like neighbors – because to him, they are. Ask him why he gave up his Sunday to battle the elements and you get the most Karl answer possible: “I’ll come up there and I’ll check it out. I just want to get my job done.”
This is the quiet grit that defines Karl and defines Drexel. The willingness to show up, no matter the weather, no matter the hour, because someone needs help. Karl doesn’t just represent Drexel — he sets the bar for what Drexel stands for.
